Potty Training

4 Pawz Forward: 4 Tips, One Goal

Set Your Puppy Up

for Success

Reinforce the Right Behavior

  1. Take your puppy out every 30–60 minutes, especially after eating, playing, or napping
  2. Bring yourpuppy on leash to the same designated potty area each time
  3. Keep outings boring and calm until they potty—no play yet
  4. Limit freedom indoors using playpens, crates, or baby gates
  1. Reward immediately with a high-value treat after your puppy goes potty
  2. Pair pottying with a cue like “Go potty” to put it on command
  3. Allow sniffing or playtime AFTER they potty—make fun the reward
  4. No potty = no play yet; consistency builds understanding

Watch, Manage & Prevent Accidents

Build a Predictable Routine

  1. Watch for signs like sniffing, circling, whining, or pacing
  2. If needed, use pee pads temporarily—transition off them as soon as possible
  3. Puppies don’t like to potty where they live—let them spend time in all safe areas
  4. If accidents happen, ignore it and calmly bring your puppy outside
  1. Never scold for accidents—shorten the time between potty breaks instead
  2. Stick to consistent potty times each day
  3. Routine helps your puppy’s body become predictable and reliable
  4. Habits = success. Consistency is the key to potty training
